Making Cards for Operation Write Home

OWH Birthday is coming up and they will be celebrating the whole month of September.

To help support them and their efforts my next card party September 17th (I have changed the date) we will be making cards for them. So bring Papers, embellishments, stamps and other supplies to make cards and join the fun. You don't have to wait until then to start making cards for them. Who ever comes with at least 20 finished cards to donate I will give a discount on any Stampin Up products ordered that day.

All cards made and donated, I will provide envelopes and pay the shipping fees to send to OWH. I also will have a collection jar so you can donate money to help offset OWH'S shipping fees to the troops. Their expected shipping fees for September, October and November are $13,000. They appreciate all donations.

What kind of cards should you make? Cards need to be A2 size (5 1/2 x 4 1/4), no glitter and well made. They can be Thanksgiving, Christmas, Birthday, Thinking of you, Miss you, I love you or blank. You can check their website for more guidelines.

I haven't made many cards lately because I have been taking several different online classes and playing with mixed media Journaling. But with several friends and family having Birthdays this month I managed to make some cards.

This next one I have done for several friends on different styled cards. It always gets a chuckle.

This next one was for my Husband on our anniversary last month. The one after that is for his Birthday. Can you tell he is into Sailing?

Random Acts of Kindness

Recently I signed up for the Random Acts of Kindness group on Splitcoast Stampers. In this group I will randomly pick someone from that group and send them one of my handmade cards to brighten their day. Also at times I might recieve a card. I am going to enjoy taking part in this group because it sure did brighten may day to recieve these 2 cards from the Welcoming Committee. This first one is from Stacy Sheldon "JBgreendawn". I had never thought to sponge the dry embossed edges that way. It really looks like that main image panel is layered.

The 2nd card is from Debra Rack "dtstampz". She also did a neat trick that I will be trying. The 3 circles on the left are not brads but punched cardstock with glossy accents.

Donating Cards to Operation Write Home.

I donate a lot of cards to Operation Write Home. It gives me a good excuse to do something I really enjoy doing: Make more cards! I am trying to fill up this medium flat rate box by February 13 with homemade cards that I make or by my family and Friends wanting to support OWH.

OWH is currently having a Spring Thaw half and half challenge.

Half of the cards you send should be either Spring, Easter, Mother's Day or Father's Day. The other half should be anytime cards (Birthday, Blank, I Love you, I miss you). So far I have 44 Seasonal and 54 anytime. My 2 sisters and niece have donated more cards than I have had time to make. I think this box will hold around 250 with envelopes. I need to get busy!

I like to surf the web looking at the beautiful art work on so many cards and I end up casing quite a few of them. Today I decided to make a card that wasn't cased. The easiest way for me to do that is to do a sketch challenge and to make it before I look at it's gallery. This card was made using this weeks sketch challenge (#300) on Splitcoast stampers.

I have not posted anything in quite some time, but I have gotten to play a bit. Here are some of the ones I have made lately.

A couple of weeks ago I was signed up for a workshop on brayering that got canceled. I watched serval videos on U-tube to help me work on this technique. Here is the first card I made.

They did take a lot of time to color, but I was pleasantly surprised on how well I did.

I have wanted to try using the clorox /bleaching technique but never got around to it thinking it would be so hard to do. After seeing a card on the Stampin' Up demostrator website I just had to try the technique and case that card. It was so simple to do. Be sure to heat emboss your images first!

This next card uses a technique that I thought I had read from Technique Junkies Newsletter. In trying to find what it is called I could not find it there or on Splitcoast. If anyone does find out please send me a link. To do this technique you heat emboss a solid image using white embossing powder on a dark background. You then use a permanant marker like Copic or Sharpie to color the embossing.

Operation Write Home's Birthday Bash

OWH's birthday is September 12. They are having a Birthday Bash for all of September. They are asking for lots of cards to be sent in, Half of them Christmas Cards and the other half anytime cards (birthday, miss you, thinking of you, anniversary, I love you). If any of my card making friends would like to help me support this cause in the month of September; send me your cards I will stamp the back with the OWH logo and send them in. Usually I fill a small sized flat rate box (around 45 to 50 cards) every 2 to 3 months and send in. My goal this time (with your all's help), is to fill a medium sized flat rate box. I'll even pay to ship even more boxes if we fill them up.

Your cards should be handmade only, A2 sized, no glitter, if it is dark cardstock have a light colored liner inside. Here is a link to OWH's website. It has tips in what they want for the cards.

Making your own shimmer mist spray

This is not my original idea to make the spray using these products. I've read about it in several different blogs. My apologies that I don't remember whose blogs I've read it on so I can give credit where credit is due. I do a lot of web surfing on card making blogs.

Here is what I did; I filled a small spray bottle half way full of rubbing alcohol then dumped in a little of the Stampin' Up's Champagne mist shimmer paint. I thought to add just a little bit, test it, and if I wanted more shimmer I would add more of the paint. I got lucky and was pleased with what I added the first time. You do have to keep shaking the mixture because it does separate.

The shimmer paints were offered in Stampin' Up's last Holiday Mini Catalog. They were so popular that they still offer them as a write in on orders. They are $5.95 each.

If you don't want to mix your own up; Stampin' Up is offering Smooch Spritz in their current Summer Mini Catalog. Smooch spritz comes in Gold Glow, Silver Foil, Vanilla Silver and Log Cabin and are $4.95 each.

Here are the cards we will be working on this Saturday's playday.

This card uses White Glossy card stock and makes it more elegant.

I made my own shimmer mist spray by mixing Chamagne shimmer paint and rubbing acohol. I sprayed it on the embossed So Saffron cardstock. It really does not show up well in the photo. I also highlighted the fairy wings and some flower centers in the dsp paper with the shimmer paint. The layout is from a previous sketch challenge on Splitcoast, SC258. My oldest daughter told me out of all the cards I have made, this one is her favorite!

This card I made this week from a sketch challenge on Stars and Stripes. I like it so much I just had to share it on a playday.

When I first started playing around with this Faux Pinwheel layout, it was hard to eyeball putting the larger squares of the pinwheel in place. On the back I ended up drawing a lot of lines from corner to corner trying to put the pieces evenly in place. It was too much work for one card. After putting it together I traced it and made a template to go by.

I am a big fan of Michelle Zindorff's blog. Some day I hope to go to one of her workshops on brayering. I've played around with brayering and would like to learn how to do it better. This card is from a tutorial on the direct to paper technique (an easier technique than brayering).

Normally on playdays I will do 3 make and takes. This month I only did 2, then we mass produced several cards to send to Operation Write Home Organization.

I love the sunrise in the background on this one. Finding the right sponge to work with makes doing it a lot easier. I use to use make up sponges, but it was hard getting pleasing results. I finally bought the sponges from Stampn' Up - much better results.

Here are the make and takes from my November playday.

I love the Patterned Pines stamp set with the white embossing.

The idea for this card came from the swaps that I got in October.

This pull out card was demonstrated at the SU Regionals. It looked a lot simplier, but for me getting the sides glued just right so that the pull out can go in and out smoothly is a bit tricky.

Stampn' Up Half Day Regional in Chattanooga

I had a blast at the SU Half Day Regional for demonstrators here in Chattanooga back in October. Swapping card fronts was like Trick or Treating on Halloween but better. I came home with a least 40 different ones. Several demonstrations were done and we got to do 3 make and takes all with the Berry Christmas stamp set we were given.

Today I am going to the Stampin' Up half day regionals here in Chattanooga.

I have made card fronts to swap with other demonstrators.

On half of the fronts I used Night of Navy, but when I ran out of that color of cardstock, I used Not Quite Navy on the others. The other colors on the fronts are Kraft and Ruby Red. Stamps used are: Medallion and Warm Words. Here is my example of how to make the front into a card.

In celebration of World Card Making Day on October 3, Stampin’ Up! demonstrators world-wide will hold stamping events all month long to create hand crafted cards and kick off the holiday card-making season. It occurs the first Saturday in October each year, and card-making enthusiast of all skill levels and styles are encouraged to come together and share their creative passion for the art of card making.

I also used 1/2 and 1/4 inch circle punches for the eyes. For the nose and side bolts I used the smallest arrow on the my way punch and cut off the tip.

Witch Sack

I thought the Frankie sacks I had seen on several different paper craft web sites were so cute I had to make one. Both my daughters thought it was cute too. I showed Michelle a blog that had done the same thing with a bat, vampire and a Santa Claus theme. (Link to that blog http://dreamcreateandshare.blogspot.com/2009/09/and-heres-frankie.html )
Michelle decided she wanted to do a witch. If it was me wanting to do a witch, the first thing I would do is surf the web searching for someone's ideas of how to do a witch. Not Michelle, she is a lot more creative than I am. She sits down with pencil and paper and does a sketch, then proceeds to make her witch sack.

As I have posted in a previous blog, I love to make cards, more cards than I will ever send out so I donate them to different causes. A couple of times I have sent cards in for the Cards for a Cause Challenge on Splitcoast Stampers. Stampin' Up workshop

I am excited about being a demonstrator for Stampin' Up. Since my sister Marie has been one for several years, I have never bothered to sign up. With so much other stuff on her mind these days, she has decided to let her status go inactive.

I will be hosting workshops with make and takes in my house almost monthly. My first workshop as demonstrator will be Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 1:00pm.

I would also love the opportunity to help you host rubber stamping parties in your home and you would receive the free stamps and supplies.

Card Making Swap

On March 28th I hosted a card making swap. There were 8 ladies (including me) that brought supplies to make 8 projects on a design of their choosing. Everyone demonstrated their design and then everyone got a chance to make each project. In the end everyone left with 8 cards/projects and only 1 was their design.

I took a class to learn how to make a starbook. Christie Hawkins (pic) from Jacksonville, FL taught it while she was here in Chattanooga visiting family.

To mount or un-mount

The Stampin' Up rubber stamps comes cushioned but un-mounted on the wooden blocks. Instead of using the included wooden blocks I mount mine on 1/16 inch thick vinyl cling sheets. There is adhesive on one side which goes next to the rubber stamp and vinyl cling material on the other. This side temporarily adheres to the clear acrylic blocks.

The thicker 1/8 inch vinyl cling sheets I use on stamps that have been previously mounted on wooden blocks. When I take them off the block usually the cushion comes off also.

Using these vinyl sheets is an extra expense but to me it is worth it because it is extremely helpful in positioning your work and in storing your stamps.
